The story behind the film

Cairns: Slow Down, Look Closer

Cairns Lagoon and its fish sculptures beneath a blue sky

A walk close to home

Not every journey needs a packed vehicle or a distant destination. Sometimes, it begins with slowing down in a place you already know. This short film follows my walk through Cairns, the city I call my home base.

The Lagoon is where the film opens: clear blue water, fish sculptures reaching into the sky and the waterfront stretching into the distance. Palms move above the path. I stop to look at details that are easy to miss when the day becomes a list of things to do.

From the waterfront, the walk moves into the city. Shopfronts, shaded footpaths and people passing through bring a different rhythm. These everyday scenes belong to the journey as much as the open views.

Then the pace softens. Birds rest on the grass, untroubled by the hurry around them. Beneath the large trees, hanging roots and light filtering through the leaves give me another reason to pause. The camera stays with these small moments.

The film returns to the water, but the walk has changed the way I see a familiar place. I have not travelled far. I have simply paid a little more attention.
